The moment you're born you begin to die.
You're only going to live for about 900 months if you're lucky. Living beyond that isn't much fun anyway, since you become completely dependent on others again like when you were an infant. So the ride is a short one anyway you look at it and no matter what kind of ride you're dealt.
Everything you love and care about is going to be taken from you eventually. Either through their death or by you dying, or zipping out of your life as in a relationship like in your case or when your children grow up and go off on their own. So toss the word forever out the window, because it is meaningless.
All your pets will die. All your children will grow up and die.
You see one of the secrets of life is realizing that you enter it with nothing and you will leave with nothing.
It really is a tragedy when you put some deep thought to it all. You come here create things and zap you're gone and walk out with nothing but your soul.
Thus, and this is the key phrase to keep your peace of mind:
ULTIMATELY NOTHING MATTERS
As soon as you emblazon this fact of life into your soul, you can live a happy life, because nothing will bother you much anymore and you'll realize that everything is just on lease to you and nothing more than that.
