Yishai... scary sounding stuff (even if it's a little old).
http://www.lukeford.com/archives/updates/000817.htm
from lukeford.com (above):
Brad Shaw phones in.
Brad: "You want to talk about the downfall of Serge? One day he woke up and all his clicks were gone. He was sending 90% of his traffic to Yishai and behind the site he was popping a consul. So he was really sending two hits for every one hit. And eventually Yishai smartened up to it.
"And on top of that, Serge was buying worse and worse traffic, from blind links, and his [conversion] ratios plunged... And Serge couldn't do anything with all his traffic because nobody wanted to buy it. So he started lowering what he was paying... So the people who were sending him traffic, decided to go straight to Yishai and deal with him directly. And it all came down on one night."
Lee: "I thought he retired voluntarily?"
Brad: "He claims he made $32 million in 1999 and I can believe it. He's brokering one to two million hits a day. Buying the traffic for three to four cents and selling it for six and seven cents. That's a lot of money."
Lee: "You don't think the FTC is going to come down on him?"
Brad: "I actually talked to the FTC last year. They were monitoring the Netpond board. Someone contacted me. And of course they've looked into [the Crescent Publishing] sites which promised 'Your credit card will not be billed'...
"People will talk about Serge and say anything bad about anyone, but people are afraid to say anything bad about Yishai."
Lee: "Why, do you think Yishai is going to put cement boots on us and drop us over the bridge?"
Brad: "When I was introduced to Yishai... The person who introduced me said, 'Don't ever say anything bad about this guy, Brad. He'll have you taken care of.' And he was dead serious."
Luke: "What do you know about Yishai?"
Brad: "I know how he runs his sites, which everyone knows. Obviously I feel that it is bad for our industry. But right now it is too late. The harm has already been done. The guy has made a fortune, $100 million, $200 million, $300 million, there's no telling. How the guy gets credit card accounts, I'll never know."
Lee: "You know they have this guy under investigation."
Brad: "Oh sure they do."
Lee: "Do you think Yishai's affiliated with organized crime?"
Brad: "I won't touch that one with a ten foot pole."
Lee: "I don't blame you. I think we all know that answer."
