I was actually there that year, at mardi gras in Pioneer Square.
The crowd was getting very ugly, there was also a young man beaten to death and bottles/bricks thrown at most of the building's windows. The starbucks windows got completely destroyed. My friend has footage of a guy getting sucker punched to the ground, then someone else goes up to him and it looks like he is going to help him up, but instead he just steals the guy's coat and runs off.
This was fairly soon after the WTO riots, and there was a lot of hostility against the police, etc. in Seattle at the time.
