If somebody told you that in order to get into heaven, you would have to believe and do everything Charles Manson told you to do... would your attitude be "better safe than sorry"?
It DOES hurt to believe in things that you don't know or understand. If everyone were to fill the holes in their knowledge with unfounded beliefs, there would be no more progress... no more learning, or advancing. Seems to me like there could be no greater harm to society than that.
