Not to defend cops for a second, but I have seen first hand how some cops practice what was called "corrective flexible justice". They would illegally search many, many people, and guess what? They often caught people carrying weapons and drugs and such. Good cops develop a sixth sense almost as to who are the bad guys and they find a way to bust them. Then they work out the details of how to make the bust stick. This is the flexible part since many cops rationalize that they should be afforded opportunity to make creative arrests of people who are legitimately breaking the law. Many times this results in bullshit searches that read later in the reports "Saw the bag in plain view" , "smelled a strong odor of marijuna" "defendant consented to search of vehicle". The bottom line is if you want to carry illegal contraband your accepting risk. Likely is you wont get popped but then again if you are busted at least some blame should be accepted personally for placing yourself in harms way.
