Among cold wallets, I have only tried Ledger and yes direct payment to ledger is not supported by CB, Like I said Ledger uses a native segwit network that has a different Bitcoin address length compared to older Bitcoin networks like Legacy
Regarding your second question, That's correct but keep in mind before transferring your assets to a cold wallet, check the network fee. You can use this site.
