You may have been addressing this to another person posting in thus thread, but I gotta answer:
I can't speak for some of the people who have jumped into my "niche" now that there is coin in it, but I was shooting and publishing cool people probono for years before the internet and before digital cameras. They were not Siouxie look-a-likes because I like to photograph and support individuals with personal flair and unique style, but everybody was involved for love of a certain sort of scene sensuality, not for money. I still do a lot of free work and gigs which cost me coin to support my scene. I do a lot to promote my models' other projects. I give back to my community.
During the zine explosion, a lot of passionate creative people went hungry and drove sucky cars and lived in punk rock group houses and took day job dollars and pumped them into zines and books and magazines. I have been doing what I do for A LOT longer than there was coin in it. It might seem odd now, but there was a time when it was a radical political statement to put forth the concept that a girl with purple hair could be beautiful, that cool people could be attracted to each other and love each other, and I got into this because I really believed in the cause and the lifestyle.
And, yes, I am enough of a punk to feel like it is less pure now that
Blue Blood makes money instead of losing it. I've done more than one zine about entitlement issues.
