As for Russia - Soviet era was shit because of communism. If you look at East Germany before whole Berlin Wall then it was also sad place, and now without communism people are content. Nothing in the landscape changed, nothing new started growing that wasn't growing before. Libya is not able to self-sustain. They have oil, natural gas, and probably various things that can be mined like iron. Libya was wealthy because of export of this stuff.
They do not have endless arable land to grow food on. Russia has everything. To put it another way - if Russia was it's own planet, it could support it's own population. People can survive and thrive without iphones.
