Lyndon B Johnson wanted "the great society", a USA without poverty. Today, he is the most hated of American presidents, partly because of the Vietnam quagmire, but also because he actually wanted to eradicate poverty in the most prosperous country on earth.

"Most hated of American presidents"? Where do you get that from? I doubt if you conducted a poll many Americans would choose LBJ as "America's most hated president". I am guessing that more would probably choose Nixon, for example. At least half of Americans think "The Great Society" was a great idea. Those people are called Democrats.
Vietnam certainly tarnished LBJ's presidency.
