If you are a counter person that performs no electronic work, they are probably not paid that well.
As for the grocery shoppers that automatically add a tip... they probably get a decent wage. Although because it's a separate company, I am sure they are not union as the grocery workers are.
I think the best example for what I mean would be Amazon. Say you have a prime membership... you are in a way, paying for that free shipping. Now along come Fresh... another membership fee to avoid delivery fees... on top of the prime membership...
Ok, so you shop Amazon say a couple times a week... get those packages in a day or two... do you tip that driver when he makes those drops?
Now you have Fresh... they deliver within a few hours... but now it's food and there is a place to tip.
Same company, two people making deliveries... yet only one do we tip.... or feel an obligation to tip.
How is this any different? You place an order, someone fills that order, someone delivers that order... the only difference is one is food.
Just part of the social brainwashing we are subjected to.
