Gold is very problematic, it's inherent nature as a soft metal means that the higher the carat count, the less durable it is -- the 'carat' determination of gold is the percentage of 24k gold that is in the final mix -- ie 18l is 75% gold, 14k is 59% gold -- the mix of other metals in the finished product is what makes it wearable.
Platinum is a much more durable metal than gold, much more dense as well, but the cost of a platinum watch is generally in the 50k+ range and up for a nice mans watch.
