Clearly, I think MTV affirmed what regular MTV viewers already knew. Johnny Cash is a flash in the pan with no real impact on music or its history, and is basically a sell out who only cares about radio and tv airtime. He may have gotten a little bit of popularity from ripping off a NIN song, but he isn't original or a real musical artist like Elliot, Coldplay, Timberlake, or The White Stripes.

On the otherhand, Missy Elliot and Justin Timberlake are long term musical stars who only care about the quality of their music, not whether it will be popular on the radio/mtv. They have already altered the course of musical history, and will be around for decades making awesome contributions to the record industry.

As usual, another excellent decision by MTV and its well educated viewers and staff!
