True, tho there is always "backlink paradox" - you can have shittiest content out of all websites, yet with sufficient amount of backlinks you can still rank good. Pornhub is good example, they are based on moded clipshare script, most of descriptions have a word or two only , but they are still number one site in seo thanks to biggest number of backlinks.
So in SEO, you have two choices - to be creative and create unique content to rank for keywords which does not have much competition , or just spin generic content and push all resources to number of backlinks.
