Thinking the way that you appear to be thinking, then yes, it is unnecessary - Totally. But think of it this way...
You wear shoes yeah? Why? Well above all else, to protect your feet. Fair enough, so why not just get one single pair of heavy duty black boots and be done?
Because you don't want just one pair of shoes, and you want to be able to choose your shoes based on the activity or dress code of an event... Its nice and functional to have a choice...
That's what I mean about hair - Change your hair, change your mood - Different looks for different events. I'm not suggesting all the wigs should all look absolutely real... Just that changing your hair could be the same as changing your shoes, if people's perceptions changed as to male wig wear...
