Most of the time I forget I served until someone in my family says "thank you for your service" on Veteran's day. I get a text every year from an uncle thanking me. I'll answer back "you're welcome?"

I served during Desert Storm, so that makes me a veteran of that war but I don't think about myself that way since I wasn't crawling in the desert firing a rifle. I serviced aircraft that went over there. That's all.

But anyway... I don't understand people who brag about serving. A guy I lift with is an ex-marine who has had trigger time. He doesn't get all gung-ho about having killed people while he was there. The most he said about it was that he once had a really bad day where he was covered in the blood of four of his buddies.
