Less Than Half Feel 'Extremely' Proud to be American

AMERICANS' PRIDE IN THE United States has hit its lowest point in almost two decades, with less than half saying they are "extremely proud" to be American.

A Gallup poll released just two days before the Fourth of July found that 70% of people said they were extremely or very proud to be Americans, including 45% who said they were extremely proud – the lowest measure since Gallup began polling on the question in 2001.

The percentage has been on the decline for years, the pollster said. In 2017, 75% of people said they were extremely or very proud, including 51% who said they were extremely proud to be American.

Among those who identify with a political party, Democrats continue to lag behind Republicans when it comes to feeling patriotic. Some 22% of Democrats say they are extremely proud to be an American, a 10-point decrease from last year and the lowest in 19 years, while 76% of Republicans and 41% of independents say the same. Republicans have consistently said they felt more patriotic than Democrats, never falling below 64%.

Of the 45% of Americans who report being extremely patriotic, men are more likely than women to say it, at 48% compared to 43%. People 65 years and older are the most patriotic, with 63% reporting they feel extremely proud to be American. Young people ages 18-29 are most likely to report feeling only moderately proud to be American, at 33%.

According to the poll, of eight aspects of the U.S. government, most people, 91%, report being proud of the country's scientific achievements. The least amount, 32%, report being proud of the American political system. Eighty-nine percent of Americans are proud of the military, while 37% are proud of the country's health and welfare system.

Gallup states that the decline is largely driven by Democrats, who have "entrenched views" of President Donald Trump.

"Absent a significant national event that might rally all Americans around the flag, given Democrats' entrenched views of the president, these historically low readings on American pride are likely to continue until Trump is no longer in office," Gallup said in its analysis.
