I stand, err, lie down, corrected:

“HPV can infect the mouth and throat and cause cancers of the oropharynx (back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils). ... It is unclear if having HPV alone is enough to cause oropharyngeal cancers, or if other factors (such as smoking or chewing tobacco) interact with HPV to cause these cancers”.

I haven’t read any more information about this so won’t speculate about the type of cancer he has.

I’ll try to search tomorrow for more information. If he’s planning on touring, then he knows that his voice will be fine. But — you can’t be sure of the outcome until surgery. Maybe he had surgery and is recuperating.
