I disagree with you here.... You are looking through history and judging it decades later, and then trying to imagine what you would have done then - but you are looking at it through the lends of a forty or fifty year old man, not a college student in the 1960s.
Back then in the 1960s protesters didn't see a difference between soldiers and the government; They were considered one and the same. Soldiers were considered "baby killers" that worked for the government. When the soldiers of Vietnam came back home they were crapped on, treated very poorly, and for the most ignored.
