Religious people have extremely low IQ's on average.
When people feel part of a peer group or follow a "fearless leader" they do anything to keep the structure of their belief system intact, and that includes denying reality and backing up Dear Leaders lies & mistakes, whether they know they are lies or not.
As just one example, look at the Catholic Church and all the children molested yet the follower still believe and they don't care that the perpetrators on their children are not punished.
Look at the Christian church and all the people ripped off by pastors buying chats and mansions while the parishioners suffer.

Actually if you watch the "idiot" video I posted in a few red hat topics, low IQ people don't like people smarter than them. It's why Red Hats hate science because they don't understand it and want a simple explanation they can understand that backs up their personal beliefs.
Trump is stupid he talks simple like them so he's their "dear leader" vs a guy like Obama who was very smart but didn't talk like a simpleton.. Obama scared them because he was smarter than they are..
