That sounds bad, but imagine you're him. You horribly disfigured your beautiful wife in a stupid accident that is TOTALLY your fault. Every time you look at her mutilated face, you are reminded of that.
How do you deal with that?
Suicide, and cause her more pain and suffering?
Maybe try sucking it up and find yourself dreading going home, so you start working late and hitting the bars - any excuse not to go home - how long will that work?
In the end, if he couldn't hack it, then his leaving is probably better than if he stayed.
