The cougar is about 60% of the normal size, he had rickets and other diseases when he was adopted. The guy just won't survive in the wild. So the humans that adopted him are the only family he has (a pride is a very important thing for big cats).
These animals live in a strict hierarchy. I see that this particular cat fully obeys the man, who he considers a master (an alpha). He does recognize his wife as a member of the pride, but... that man is the only person he really obeys. His wife is ok for him, but she's on the same level.
