The noble Romans knew this to be true
There seems to have been a healthy trade in feces in Roman times, as the stercorarii —"poop collectors"—were documented to have collected and sold it.
One in particular, named NonInebriari ("NotDrunk"), came to the attention of Julius Caesar who said of him "He would often relate, during my campaign against the Nervii, that he was unable to afford anything, he being famously impecunious, as he kept rather than sold what faeces he collected"
