I think he would even say that he didn't, but that wasn't really his job was it? He didn't make things worse. Maybe in your eyes because it seems to bother you immensely that a man of a different colour could get elected, which is odd for someone under 65. but regardless, other than getting elected in itself he didn't seem to help the issue.
Your current president has literally made things far worse though. All he had to do was nothing... and he would be right there with Obama without blame or recognition for anything to do with race... but he hasn't done that has he? He feels that he needs to say offensive things often to satisfy his 'base'. angering up the opposition is his only weapon because every time he does it, no matter what he says, you get happy. So happy that he can do anything to anyone and you will give it a pass.
The question now is... what do you do with yourself once he's gone? No matter when that is, or how that comes about, he will be gone. He will not be replaced by anyone similar. So where do you go from there?
