expired as expired with new date is almost the same as getting fresh domain, but if they already have links from authority sites they probably will rank faster than new ones without any links.
some drop sites keep the old date and those domains didn't expire in google's eyes and those rank quite good, but still you need to have good fast loading site with good original content in the first place.
