At first they did, and I agree with you, I'd resist giving my phone for the same reasons you listed.
Later they asked him to supply his phone records. My guess is they already had his phone records because they can get those in an instant in an investigation. I think they knew that he had called his friends and they were testing him to see if he'd comply with their request. If he didn't it would indicate he was in on it.
He took a week to give them his phone records and when he did they were heavily redacted and did not include calls made during the time of the attack.
