If you use a tool like ahrefs you will see that more and more tube sites gain from a large number of a very wide selection of longer tail terms than specific short terms. Site names and urls are less visible to the ranking algorithms because they don't lead people to what they actually want.
What you need to understand is that what works in safe search does not work with safe search off, because safe search introduces biases into ranking that don't exist with safe search off.
Most keyword analysis tools can't pick up on those biases, you need to test for them.
I can also rely upon the search terms that I see used by the people who use my own search engine. I have a microscopic market use Node.XXX however it's a good representative sample and without giving any secrets away most users that may result in a click are searching for very specific things, thus longer tails.
