I saw it as them waving the blanket closed back and forth then all of a sudden opening it and the cat jumping to safety.
At first I was like they must have some way of making the cat feel safe to jump by swing it back and forth closed, kind of like you can make a crocodile fall asleep by caressing its belly. But after your comment I re-watched it and it's clear that he was shaking the cat out of the tree
