They have a bit of double standard they have to avoid.
It seems that most of silicon valley and the tech giants here want to be able to hire hi-tech folks from India and some other areas of the world and have been doing so for the last 10 years+ replacing jobs that paid US folks 120k with benefits packages costing yet 20k more with these folks that are willing to come here on these visa's and work for 80k with benefit packages of 12k.
So they lobbied for much of the immigration changes that they can not deny the same of the Mexican folks. It appeases the AG co's here enough to keep both sides in a pool of cheap labor.
Politicians can not deny it, they created it at the request of and nearly written by US Company's. It's just one more case of Government for you, if you have the money to spend. Both party's are at fault no matter what they say. I blame the Republicans more, for it is they who command the issue every election and have been getting the results they desire for almost 20 years. They have stopped all legislation for any changes except to allow more of the same.
But now it is a embedded feature in how things are done and to make a change now would have them all crying foul. Claiming how the cost of everything would go up.
Tell that to the 100k hi tech collage educated folks that lost their jobs to Those to India.
Where is the outcry ?
The double whammy now is, who is going to spend 60-100k on a 4-6 year education when by the time you are ready for the workforce, you may be replaced by a legal immigrant but not citizen. It would be a stupid move in my book because you may never get your investment back. A self generated shortage now has to be filled by those on the outside.
After the bank collapse, they laid-off most of silicon valley. Everyone thought it was do to the banking crisis. But then why did they start hiring all those from India ?
But I am very tired of those who do not understand the so many details of what has been going on and who has caused it blowing smoke up everyone's ass.
They don't really want to fix this. But they will talk about it and do other meaningless things to get your vote.
A wall is meaningless without people to enforce it. If you have the people, you don't need the wall. It becomes a mere obstacle slowing them down. If the border patrol who gets the job done have requested it for certain areas, they should at least get consideration for it.
And that is probably how the wall will play out in the end.
But this does little to change Immigration and the cheap labor it provides preventing wage growth across all segments of the US economy, from the bottom up. So when this fails to do the job, what will they blame 3-6 years from now.

For over 50 years governments have worked tirelessly to make Businesses more profitable and the people poorer. They've done this by exporting jobs, importing people and now lauding automation. The end result is lower wages, lower taxes, more unemployment and poverty. But the 1% still get richer and hide their money from taxes.
