When you lose your iPhone you expect that you can prevent it's use ever again by retaining it in your iCloud account or de-activating it.
However, most people don't do this and that can have catastrophic consequences, including allowing your iPhone to be recycled and resold. Some people don't get much of a choice when a gun is literally put to their head.

Last month, there were a string of similar muggings in Philadelphia. In each of these muggings, the perpetrator allegedly held the victim up at gunpoint, demanded that they pull out their iPhone, and gave them instructions: Disable “Find My iPhone,” and log out of iCloud.
