I think the midterms showed that Trump has a huge uphill battle ahead of him.
There were many places that voted for Trump then flipped and voted Democrat in the midterms. They could go back and vote Trump again, but it shows they are willing to vote against him. Trump is playing on a balance beam. He has carved out his base and he is playing to them and only them. It's simple. You are with him, or you are dead to him. I'm not so sure he is going to be able to pull that one off again.
Of course, a lot of this has to do with who the Democrats pick. If they pick someone who ignites the base and will motivate young voters to get out there and vote, Trump is in serious trouble. The last election was very close. He barely beat a corrupt, career politician who was actively under Federal investigation and who had the lowest favorability rating of any candidate in history. If he has to face someone half the Democrats don't hate, he will have some serious trouble.
