Filecoin is an early and not-likely-to-succeed version of an idea TONS of people are having: Use blockchain as a trustless contract/payment system for decentralized/distributed content storage and distribution.

Off the top of my head, there's filecoin, siacoin, theta token, blockcdn (already defunct?), and videocoin.

Someone's gonna get it right. My money's on videocoin, but who knows.

But 10 years from now, companies are going to be using decentralized/distributed CDN for content delivery, and there's a damn good chance the contracts/payments solution will be built on blockchain.

Filecoin? Probably won't win in this space, but who knows.
