I didn't read the article, but the most successful blue states have huge cities. Outside of those cities (and nearby suburbs) the state is all red. These states remaining blue relies on holding minority populations down in poverty, providing strong welfare for them (and crediting Dems for giving that welfare) and brainwashing them into thinking republicans oppressed them.
The day urban and suburban minorities split their vote between Dem and Republican is the day all of these blue states turn red.
