You’re right. Creosote builds up and chimneys catch on fire. People think you start a fire and that’s it. We had a fireplace in the house where I grew up. Mom had the chimney sweep there once a year. I didn’t understand until she explained why it’s done.
Gas explosion caused the chimney to go boom. I’d not heard of a gas pressure buildup but they can now figure out how to stop it from happening.
