I saw a very interesting breakdown of this, while what he said is not for everyone and they were obviously jokes.

When he was hired by Disney originally, they vetted him (apparently their system is insanely strict) and they knew about the tweets. I believe in 2009 or around 2 months before they announced him as the director he came out in public and addressed the tweets in question, saying he had a dark sense of humor and has since grown up and learned that it was in poor taste and no longer thought that was funny.

This is the Me too movement gone too far. People make mistakes, if they already atoned for them and addressed them like he did, I think this is unfair. I had different opinion a few days ago but now knowing that he discussed this years ago, I have changed my opinion
