Remember, Edwards was a VERY hated person at that time. Probably the MOST hated man in America.
His wife was lying there dying from cancer. And she was a huge person on the public stage in battling cancer and championing cancer research in front of Congress, etc.
He actually had her out on the campaign trail with him...his wife Elizabeth was one of his biggest assets on the campaign trail.
And yeah...the anti-Edwards groups (Republicans and his Democrat opponents for the primarys) OUTED that affair to the press simply to fuck him up.
You could say he was destroyed in the court of public opinion. But it was the legal bullshit that got him charged with crimes.
