You are asking the wrong questions. Is he making money? We both know he is and he is not alone.
also 'conversion rates' is kind of a baseless term these days anyway. some sites convert with your traffic, some don't. Some can push the same site with as much traffic and can't convert it at all. given the amount of traffic sources and variations these days and the amount of sites getting an overall conversion ratio would be like someone asking you whats it like outside? and responding with the avg temperature on earth as your answer.
In general the people who focus and filter their traffic the best convert extremely well compared to someone who doesn't. If your overhead costs and time is substantially less than what you are making over an extended period of time? you are heading in the right direction. If not? you need to retool your strategy.
