I used reddit when I was first getting started, but was only able to make a couple bucks per day with that traffic. The bigger subreddits only allow established tubes so you're stuck with niche shit, which won't get you enough traffic.
Twitter/tumbler would probably be better monetized with affiliate offers (see crakrevenue) than trying to push traffic to a tube. I see lots of twitters/tumblrs doing this; they post a ton of content and mix in links to affiliate offers. I don't see any twitters/tumblrs pushing traffic at tubes.
TBH I've been running profitable tubes for years and studying all my competition religiously and the only popular tubes I see (including mine) have done it through SEO and traffic buying. Traffic buying actually seems to be a source of SEO, since it can increase your type-in traffic (which google clearly uses as a signal).
