The problem with always defending the establishment is that your opinions and biases would be entirely different in different era's.
I can't speak for American mainstream media, but the BBC is very different now from what it was 30 years ago, or 50 years ago. I can easily imagine 1960's BBC calling today's BBC "fake", because today's BBC is much more politically and culturally biased (leftist). This happened because an alternative culture grew and took over, which is what the alternative media is trying to do now.
