You might wish to read "Serpent & the Rainbow" by Wade Davis who at the time was an Ethno-Botanist at Harvard. Its a great book about the forced migrations of Africans to places like Haiti. I read it as I have an on-going interest in Voudoun and the use of natural farma.
Slavery was an improvement, a horrific one at that, after what some African Kings did before. Not always out of cruelty but out of necessity from their point of view.
