Twenty years ago kids used to go hunting with a rifle. Hunting was their hobby. While this is of course a hobby for a lot people, now there is a new hobby - the "gun enthusiast". This is someone who doesn't hunt or need a firearm for protection, but instead someone who likes firearms for all the wrong reasons. They think it's cool to have a firearm, because it makes them feel powerful. Hunters have rifles where as "gun enthusiasts" like to send 180 rounds per minute downrange.
Big difference between the two.

Rochard, Another part of this is video games and Hollywood movies. The violence in games and movies is by far, more than it was 20+ years ago. Almost everything in the games and movies are so life like now.
