You cannot stop someone from killing someone else. If they are determined they will find a way.
However, the reason mass shootings are always done with "assault style rifles" is because it's easy, they can use the weapon without fear of them being over powered, avoids close contact, and it's safe for them.
This is why we rarely see someone armed with a machete going on a rampage. If someone shoots at you with an AR15 the only thing you can do is run. But if someone comes at you with a machete it requires them to get close to their victim, and allowed them to put up some kind of a defense (such as trying to block a swing of the machete with a book bag or something). Not to mention it's a lot of work to try to kill twenty people in five minutes with a machete.
Same thing with setting people on fire with gasoline. It's dangerous and they might get harmed themselves by setting themselves on fire.
The one thing I am surprised we do not see more often is people with cars running people down. What's to stop a high school kid from plowing their pick up truck through a crowd of kids as they are leaving school for the day?
