I always order just the hamburger. About $1 to $1.25 usd. In lots of places that option is not even on the visible menu.
I see many people ordering the big meals with fries and soda, etc., and pondering over the menu like they're in a real restaurant. That's the primary customer. People who feel "uncomfortable" in a real restaurant like Applebees.
