Where did you receive the Bitcoin "to"?

Were you running a local Bitcoin client on your computer? In this instance, your funds are stored in a local wallet, which is basically a database of private cryptographic keys. If you lose your keys (ie delete the file, or HD dies), your funds are permanently lost.

Or were you using an online wallet service? If it was this, you may be able to recover your login user/pass and therefore your Bitcoins. This is assuming the online wallet website hasn't been "hacked" (air quotes) and shut down without reimbursing customers.

As freecartoonporn suggests, checking emails is a good start as it may tell you what method you used to store and receive them.
