A rifle is used for hunting and target practice. An assault rifle is used to assault a position and kill people. The rate of fire has nothing to do with it. The AR15 I have here in my house is the same exact weapon I trained with in the Marines - the only difference is the rate of fire, a handful of parts. Nonsense. Name me a single Army in the world that goes into battle armed with that famous Assault Rifle the AR-15. It is those few parts that makes the difference between being being an Assault Rifle and not being an Assault Rifle.
