Hi Paul,
You're looking at this the wrong way.
Asteroids are potentially huge sources of raw minerals like platinum, gold & silver, and materials like iron titanium, aluminum and alot more.
Some of those materials could be brought back to earth but others could be used to build new things in orbit, saving launch costs.
Of course their are technology hurdles to overcome but it's not the lack of resources on earth that will jump-start asteroid mining, it's money. The companies that can get this started first will be the ones who control the market.
