She is kind of right. I wouldn't call it a mental illness, but there is some kind of mental defect there. It's very abnormal to misidentify with the gender you're born with, otherwise it would occur in one third of the population. There's be an equal number of male, female and transgender.
But to say they're wired wrong doesn't mean I think their feelings are invalid. It's not a choice, it's something they know.
