Fact: The likelihood of a shoulder fired surface to air missile taking out a commercial airliner is around nil.

Think about it people: a shoulder fired missile has less than five pounds of high explosive in the warhead and is heat seeking.

So if you fire one at a jet liner on takeoff best case scenario you will toast one of the engines: commercial pilots are trained for this sort of shit. They'll turn the bird around and land it.

Guess what Osama: you just spent $50k on the black market to inconvenience 200 people.

Of course if you could manage to blow the wing off and ignite the wing fuel tanks...that'd be impressive.

But does anybody remember Africa this past year? A bunch of guys tried to use a missile to knock out an airliner and they couldn't even hit the damn thing.
