FreeBSD is perfectly fine for a router/gateway box. Dont know what "someone else" is smoking, but slackware is a linux distribution, has nothing to do with FreeBSD. (And as far as Linux distributions go, its pretty crappy)
Saying OpenBSD is "secure as a mofo" doesnt mean that FreeBSD is insecure. I've been using it for years and never had a system compromised.
