I'm sorry, I will not politicize this issue for I have followed and expected it for some time now.
In fact, I would say it's late in coming, probably because of the bankers deeds crash in '07 '08.
I expected to be at this point in 2012. I had wrote a few pieces on the topic in the 90's.

To explain this in a way that might be easy to understand, I will use The Beatles 'APPLE RECORDS'
It was created as a method to allow artist's a way to be herd by side-stepping those who controlled 'distribution'. The controlling of the distribution of products is what has slowly screwed the public over time.
But the internet is/was suppose to be a place where all things are equal. I use to call it the great equalizer (is coming). I could make that WIDGET and sell it to anyone. I did not have to sell my soul to some retail chain to 'MAKE IT'.

Now with that concept of Apple Records applied to just about anything in the retail supply chain, especially now that some products including music and movies can be digitally distributed, where as they could not before.

This is a disruption of the retail supply chain and those that use to control it have lost control.

The reason I have watched it so closely is because I have watched them lobby for changes in the rules (laws/regulation) to allow them to keep control.
These fights happen as most either do not notice or fail to realize the impact of them in the 'big picture' or retail.

Heck even Comcast is doing it's best to not become just a generic 'PIPE' it all goes through. They have control and it looks as of late, they will be able to increase that control along with Warner Cable and AT&T. When they became so rich from screwing you on the bill forcing you to subsidize unwanted channels, they took those profits and bought up every movie house so they not only controlled the distribution, but the creation of the future and the past CONTENT. Now I praise Amazon and others who are creating their own original content. Because to buy content from those in control would not fit the biz model that Comcast knows that breaking point and was priced correctly just because of it.

I really don't feel sorry for the large retailers since they have been playing the game I most hate... MERGER AND ACQUISITION
For while they where gaining control of their respective markets by merger, costing loads of jobs by itself, and eliminating competition, costing you money because the cost of the acquisition is paid by someone now isn't it.

So they have been playing the wrong game, but it was the only one they knew how to play. They already made plenty of money for those decisions and you paid for it.

So, I see this as the inevitable. But be warned... He who can control the internet has vast power beyond your belief.
Keep your eyes on it. Defend it since it really is your last hope of individual and collective power. The changing of a few words in some House bill in some committee you never herd of has much more impact than ever.

I use to have 14 grocery stores, 12 banks, 23 gas stations in my area.
..........now...3 grocery, 4 banks, 5 gas stations
And the only thing that has really changed is the expected margins of the profits.
And 15% of the local employment.

Merger and acquisition allowed the ventures in online. A method around 'control'.
