I think I misunderstood, and Wikipedia is actually saying that implementations of the VM itself has been written in C++, Java etc (ie, what the coin client would run) rather than the contracts being written in that language. Just like a Java VM would be coded in (say) C, even though the VM runs code compiled from Java.
But the original point was that Etherium programming isn't limited solely to Solidity, which you've reinforced above.
